Director Anubhav Sinha’s much-anticipated movie Ra.One, which features Shahrukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor in the leads, has made mind boggling start at the Box Office. In many theatres, the screening of the superhero film began at 8 a.m and it registered 95-100% occupancy on the first day of its release.
The Rs 145-crore film was released on Wednesday in 3,200 screens across India. Every multiplex has about 18 shows a day, and for this reason alone the collections should be very substantial. “The fact that ticket prices are upwards of 20 per cent from the regular price point will also add to the collections,” says Vishal Anand, head of operations, Fun Cinema.
RA.One’ continues a trend initiated by Krrish and Enthiran. Superhero flicks are relatively new to Indian cinemaspace. It remains to be seen if audiences are receptive to the mega-film that boasts of world class VFX and graphics. RA.One is being billed as a technological masterpiece and is dubbed into Telugu, Tamil and German as well.
Salman Khan’s Bodyguard, which was released in 2,700 screens across India, was the last film to create a record first-day collection of Rs 21 crore. “I am not sure if Ra.One will beat Bodyguard’s first-day collections, but it will break Bodyguard’s record in five days,” says Delhi-UP distributor Sanjay Ghai of Mukta Arts.
Ra.One will not set a new first day record as the final day collections coming in are well off record pace especially in North and Central India. Some circuits are 50% short of Bodyguard while others are similar.
Mumbai exhibitor Rajesh Thadanai said that the all-India opening figures for single-screen theatres stood at 60 per cent and it jumped to 90 per cent in multiplexes.“The opening day response shows that the film is likely to cross the opening record ofBodyguard,” he said. The Salman Khan-starrer had grossed Rs 21 crore on the first day and over Rs 102 crore in the first week.
