Rajinikanth’s son-in-law Dhanush said he wrote the lyrics to “Kolaveri Di” while he was bored on the set of “3,” his wife Aishwarya’s upcoming Tamil film. In all honesty, it sounds like he didn’t put much thought into it. “Yo boys I am singing song, soup song, flop song,” is how Dhanush starts his song in the promotional video. That sets the tone for the rest of it. Granted it’s a mish-mash of English and Tamil but it’s fairer to say it’s 80% nonsense. We were surprised enough when we read “Kolaveri” is Tamil for “murderous rage,” but we were even more baffled by the verse “cow-u cow-u holi cow-u.”

Anirudh also accepts that it’s the bizarre lyrics that have made the song big: “If it was in Tamil, it wouldn’t have been a rage. We used the concept of broken English; the way a man, who doesn’t know the language, would sing, using very colloquial terms.”
