Novak Djokovic wore down Rafael Nadal in the longest Grand Slam singles final in the
history of professional tennis, winning 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5 after 5 hours,
53 minutes to claim his third Australian Open title.

Djokovic wrapped it up at 1:37 a.m. local time on Monday, becoming the fifth man
since the Open Era began in 1968 to win three straight Grand Slam finals.

Djokovic overcame a break in the fifth set to win his fifth Grand Slam tournament
and third in a row. None, though, quite like this. This one involved tears, sweat
and, yes, even a little blood. It was the longest Grand Slam singles final in the
history of pro tennis and it came against Nadal, the player who built a career on
his tenacity — on outlasting opponents in matches like these.

The match was the longest grand slam final ever, breaking the previous record of four
hours and 54 minutes for the 1988 US Open final between Ivan Lendl and Mats Wilander.

He staved off the first two break points – the second with a clever swinging serve out
wide – but on the third could only put a weak forehand into the net. Two routine holds
followed before Nadal upped the aggression to break for a 6-5 lead and he served it out.
